About Us
Your new favorite nursery!
Landscape Essentials Nursery was born out of a requirement for hardy plants that can grow and handle all of Taranaki's wild weather.
Every landscape needs a few essentials—whether it’s a hedge to block the cold southerly winds, native plants to restore an environment, riparian species for planting along rivers, or hardy shrubs to cover a steep bank.
But finding good-quality plants in bulk for these essential jobs was becoming increasingly difficult. That’s where we come in.
Welcome to Landscape Essentials Nursery.
But finding good-quality plants in bulk for these essential jobs was becoming increasingly difficult. That’s where we come in.
Welcome to Landscape Essentials Nursery.
Established in 2005, Kurt and Tanya Phillips have grown a small business into a thriving nursery, supplying hedging, shelter, riparian, and assorted shrub species to the local market. Today, with a dedicated team of six, we grow over 170,000 plants annually—serving everything from large-scale revegetation projects nationwide to local gardeners seeking just a few filler plants for their backyard.
The majority of our plants are ecosourced native species, grown specifically for revegetation work. We collect seeds from a wide range of plants, prioritising those from exposed environments whenever possible. This focus ensures hardy genetics—plants that are well-equipped to withstand the harsh conditions of our local landscape.
While we use propagation tunnels for cuttings and early-stage seedlings, all our plants for sale are "hardened off" in open-air conditions. Apart from some basic shelter surrounding the nursery, our plants are fully exposed to the Southern Taranaki climate—ensuring they’re tough, resilient, and ready to thrive in the real world.

About us
Locally Grown, Naturally Strong
Celebrating 20 Years of Growing with You
In 2005, Kurt and Tanya Phillips started with a simple goal: to supply high-quality, hardy plants for the landscapes and environments we all care about. What began as a small, locally-focused nursery has now grown into a trusted name in native and revegetation planting—serving projects across the country while staying true to our roots here in South Taranaki.
This year, Landscape Essentials Nursery proudly celebrates 20 years in business.
Over the past two decades, we’ve grown more than just plants—we’ve grown relationships with dedicated landowners, contractors, councils, and everyday gardeners who share our passion for restoring and enhancing the land. From shelter belts and riparian margins to large-scale ecological restoration, it’s been a privilege to supply the essentials for your landscapes.
We’re incredibly grateful to our customers, team members, and community for supporting us on this journey. As we look ahead, we remain committed to producing strong, ecosourced native plants that are ready to thrive in the real world.
Here’s to the next 20!
